ALLEGED BLACKMAILING.
The adjourned case of Ledebur v. Murphy was called on at the Magistrate's Court (Mr E. H. Carew presiding) on Friday morning. It was known the case would be defended, and considerable interest was felt in it. The plaintiff (Carl Yon Ledebur, a masseur) claimed to recover £100 from the defendant (Mrs Nancy Murphy, proprietress of the Pier Hotel) for treatment from the 28th of July to the 30th of November. On the case being called, Mr Gallaway said : I appear for the defendant. There was no appearance of or on behalf of the plaintiff. His Worship inquired if the absence of the plaintiff w»s likely to be accidental. Mr Gallaway : Not iv the least. I expected it. I apply for costs in the usual form. Mr Carew : You do not admit the claim P Mr Gallaway : Certainly not. And I think it right to say that the reason why I apply for costs is not that I have the slightest hope of recovering them, but in order to let the court know that no compromise has been arrived at between Ledebur and Mrs Murphy. According to my instructions this i» % case of blackmailing, and if Ledebur had appeared I was prepared to treat it as such. | His Worship dismissed the case, and assessed I the costß at £5 Is.
