MOSS BURN.

August 10.— The weather here now is mild, and almost balmy, indicating the near approach of .spring. The snow which fell last week has disappeared, except upon the high ranges, and the farmers anticipate a busy time almost at once. Pastoral.— Stock of every description appear in good condition, and every week sees a goodly numbersent on to the Wallacetown saleyards. The Invercargill butchers, I am'told, value Mossbum mutton, speaking highly of its flavour, Ac, which may be a reason for some of our large agriculturists going in for pastoral areas, some of them being of tha opinion that a moderate combination of agricultural and pastoral pursuits pays better j than agriculture by itself. Obituary.— l regret to say that Death has been in our midst, and with but short warning. Miss I Dolly Roger*, whose family is one of the oldest and moat respected in lavercargiU, died at the

residence of Mr Browning on the night of the Ist inst., after a few days' illness. For this fair young girl Poe's melodius dirge might have been appropriately sung—

A dirge for her. the doubly dead, In that she died so young. • Her remains were sent down by Tuesday's midday train to Invercargill. The funeral took pUce on Wednesday, and was attended by sorrowing relatives and mourning companions. Deceased assisted the Rev. L. Blackie during divine worship with the instrumental music portion of the service. She was much loved by all who knew her here.

Railway Matters.— The platform at our railway station can well bear being extended. The greater numbor of our trains arrive and depart In the dark, and as for passengers getting in f roni off or out on to the platform, it is simply impossible, as the trains are invariably long ones. Getting in and out along the line may be, nad indeed often is, attended with muoh risk. I would therefore suggest to those who have it in thoir power to attend to the matter. The officials are alwayß careful, attentive, and courteous, but they cannot be everywhere, and surely a few more yards of mason-work would not incur such a great expanse when it is so much required— is, indeed, so obviously necessary. Amusements.— The Quadrille Assembly purpose giviug a ball on the dosing night of the season, to be accompanied by games, a concert, and a supper. * School— Our little ones are rejoicing in the possession of their new shelter shed, and a great boon It proves itself to be on wet or cold mornings. Our school committee contemplate more improvements, such us painting and gravelling.
