Altbougb, as you know, these lakes, being the watershed of the Wait»ki, wore vested in us, yet I think a conjoint control might be arranged between the, Geraldine Society and ourselves with great benefit .mutually, and also with advantage to the conservation and further utility of tuc fish in these waters. I am quite .wiisfigd that there is an enormous food supply going to wa>te ia these Jakes, and a. large indusjjbrj' lying dormant— an industry, which, when •once awakened and jot in operation, will provide employment for many people, besides creating- & new export I hive been in communication with, one who, besides competent knowledge, is in a position to develop this industry, atd who is willing, with our permirsioo and assistance, to test the lakes at the proper time. The iudu«tcy would not only include getting freah trout and frozen tront for the local, aDd Australian markets, bat would also inolude s»l iog and tinning for Industries of this kind will, as you trill readily observe, add their quota for the benefit of both Oamuu and Timaru, We*re in communication with the Qeraldine Society, and hope to ha able to establish- a go id bg strong consolidated-; society, with branches in •each district to mapagc local affairs. When, the salmon ova .were expected, we were «6k<"d to ' make arrangements for a portion, and did so. <}n arrival the ovs were pot. in good condit'oo, and tlis shipment was retained in Wellington, lint we were promised a portion of the y<-<uog salmon when hatohed. We h»ve kept our. "hatcheries ready for them, otherwise we would have got trout ova. I see a number of young salmon have been «ent to Dunedin— possibly they may have forgotten us. Will you kindly make inquiries."' , -» . ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. Shennan. A. M Thereon, J. Nelßon, and W. Peterson. The broak, Loch Leven, and Scotch burn troufc are now hatching, and promise to be strong and healthy- A number of the young salmon lately received from Wellington are djing. Possibly this may be from the intense cold wo have had lately. The ducks and- pheasants are strong and in good condition, aud show sigua of pairing ; tbe pintail drakes^ have put on their winter plumage and are now very.beautiful. The gecae hie all doing well on- Waihola Lake, the covey numbering close on a hundred. Thos3 on Tuakitoto Lake are not so numerous, and are occasionally up towards the.head of the lake, but I -regret to say on Saturday, August 1, two men frqra » well-known coal mine wer^.seea pursuing them and killing one." Banger Morris is on their' trail, and if he can find out the particulars, steps wall be taken to prosecute. I niay state that Hanger Morris, having received an appointment in Queensland, will be leaving shortly. In answer to the Cnairuann, the Manager said 20 or 30 salmon were dying every day. — The report was adopted. GENERAL. • Ringer Morris wrote thanking the sooiety for their assistance in obtaining for him the appointment to the Queensland Socittj.— Received. The South Queensland Society wrote concerning Banger Morris'^ appointmeut, and expressed a strong wish that he should bring with him a small consignment of Califorshn quail.— The letter was received, the Secretary mentioning that Mr Bills had got the order for the quail, but he was afraid he would not be able to get them. : The Wellington Acclimatisation Sooiety wrote abating that strong recommendations had been made to them re the imposition of gun licenses, and they were of opiuiou that su<)h licenses weie desirable to prevent the indiscriminate use of firearms, and to prevent boys and youths carrying them, and disturbing stock. They suggested that a fee of 10s should be charged and collected by the postmaster in the same w&y as game licenses now were. They pointed' out that exemptions would be necessary f 6r military purposes and for the destruction of rabbits aud other vermin. A considerable amount of revenue would be derived from this BQiuce, and would increase the funds tf ihs Booieties.- They asked for the Obago Scciet/s opinion -in tbe - mattar, and ' suggested that Government might briDg in a bill in connection therewith.— The Chairman thonght tbab in view of the stnallnegs of the meeting it would be bejfc'ttv de?es consideration. In any case the present litting of Parliament would not do anything in the matter.— Consideration was deferred, .Accounts amountinflfcoi£4B U&M nareDttJied torpavmenk
