He converted communities, to uee his own words, of loathsome aavAges,' sunk in poverty and degradation, intd communities . of prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst bo doing, I>ut providing his own food out of tha soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the s&me af t9r a civilised manner, thus saving people's eoula and their bodies as well. He preserved and fully records the »Id Maori mythology (a sublime one), the custodians of which all died before hiß own demise.
