WELLINGTON NOTES.

Br Onlookbb.

June 29. Slaiden appears to relish heavy going. The course at Otaki was soft, but nothing compared ■with that at Hastings on Saturday last, when he started in the June Handicap, which he won. The horse had to be. on .the ground when the weights were de ] clared, so he was quite at the mercy of the handicapper. He was on offer before the Otaki meeting for £100, bo hii owner informs me, but there were,no buyers, and since then 'he haswoa £130 in stakes.and a fiver on him in each start would have returned £233— total, £353— rather a good return for a £100 hone within five'weeks. Sortie, the Gatesby— Barosma colt recently, shipped from Blenheim to Sydmy, appears among the entvieß for the Melbourne Cup and Champion Stakes. That is pretty high game for an untried one. He is nominated by Mr F Ladee. Sorlie was entered for the Catesby Stakes. Another entrant, Silver, is dead. A. J. Death, well known in the-Ashburton and Blenheim districts, rider of Orient to victory in the Wellington Steeplechase, is laid up in the Melbourne Hospital suffering from pneumonia. During the last few yeara Death has been riding over fences in New Soutlr Wales. # Primula, who won the Welter at" Hastings on Saturday, is one of Mr Douglas's breeding, by Torpedo—Primrose, and sister to the same owner's Prose, who has been backed for the next New Zealand Oup.
