WAIWERA.

June 29.- One can scarcely refrain from making the weather tbe'cbief topicof the day.' " It is still remarkably fine, the general outcry umong the housekeepers being for rain to fill the tanks, ftc. —a most unusual state of affairs for tlm season of the year. . This little inconvenience, however, is more than niado up for by the, general benefit to stock and the great saving of feed, and as long as we have plenty of good water in the creeks and rivers that can be got with little trouble, we can do with a lot of the present weather. Ball.— Last Friday evening the local bachelors and their- friends held the annual bachelors' ball in the public hall. It proved very successful, many coming from long distances to attend. Temperance. -On Monday eveningthe B»nd of I Hope held their first entertainment for the season in the Mission Hall. There was a very fair attendance. Several friends and young people i assisted the children in the singing, and the performance throughout seemed to db thoroughly appreciated. This is generally the caie whenever the Waiwera children .and young folks have their entertainments, and especially with such a deserving object in view as the Band of Hope. It is sin established fact iv Waiwera that every effort for the good and benefit of any social reform is always well suppurted, if not with large numbers, at all events with every other encouragement and sympathy. The programme consisted of recitations, singing, and instrumental music, with a good and practical address by the Rev. Mr Kilpatrick, of Warepa. The ladies who contributed to the nighrs enjoyment were the Misses Blaikfe, Edwards, Tetera/BroaiJ, CallunJ, Sim, Cooke.&nd ; Rosevear, assisted by Messrs W. Nicol, Henderson,. Cairney, Tait, and Rosevear.' Mr Tait, seij., occupied the" tftair, and in his usual goo3h'ntnoured way kept the audience amused. 'Miss li. Blaikie'presided efficiently at the organ. The usual vote? of thinks brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Political.— General regret is expressed at the coming retirement of our M.H.R., Mr Thomas \ Mackenzie. We can ill afford at this time to lose euch a man from the House of Representatives. However, we must submit with the beßt grace possible, and I hope we shall be able to find a good man from among the ranks of farmers to take his place, as the Olutha is such an exttnsivo fanning district. "Indeed we have a good man near home— Mr J. A. Anderson— whose name I have already heard mentioned in connection witb. the vacancy.
