Temuka —Draughts are going ahead here jitst now. There are practice matches held monthly, and arrangements artf^being mads to play tne annual match with Pleasant Point and also: a match with Tinmru at an early date. A match wa3 played on the 18th ult. at Teiuuka between J. Sim (I'emuka) and D, Stewart (Timaru) for" a stake, and was won by the local player with the score of 2 wins against 1 wio, with 3 games drawn. It is un 'erstood that Mr Beck (Seadown) 13 to challenge Mr Sim to play a match for the South Canterbury championship some time before the winter is over. Problem 1399.— A large number of solutions of this problem have been received, about half a dozen being correct. Some curious remarks n.ve made. One correspondent says he." sees no great merit in the problem — one of those simple blunders to bo seenoften in problems," but Bis solution allows two for nothing 1 Another takes ifc for a hoax, and supplies a really elaborate solution for a draw, but just misses the point. ' I fail even to find where the difficulty cornea in," says one, but no play is forwarded. I did it under 15 minutes" is attached to a onr-variation solution. The following estimate of the difference between the styles of Wjllie and Martins is given in the Aberdeen Weekly Free Press os part of a conversation recently overhead at a draughts club i— "Wyllie usually gets a gtup o1o 1 ye early i* the game, which he tichtena an' tichtens an' tichtens till yer spinal colum' gi'es wye— an' that's the cn 1 0' ye. Martins, on the ithcr band, lats ye sail alang easily and pleasantly till the game's gey' weel advanced an' ye think ye're ncht for a 'draw.' Syne he tak's a lang, solem', critical survey o* the situation, and gradually aaweet, benignlike Bmile illuminates his fine intelligent face— an' when ye see that ye may conclude it's up wi' yo. He moves, and ye may Bee naething i' the move, but afore mony shifts ye're trippit up the ne*test an' bonniest that ever ye saw Ye mai feel a little suir, but ye canna help admiring his sfcratigy." -
