Dr Abernethy, the! famous Sootoh surgeon, .was a man of few wordi, bat once he met his mateh — in a woman. She called at bis office in Edinburgh one day and showed a hand badly inflamed - and swollen, when the following dialogue, opened by the doctor, took place :— "BnrnP" « Bruise.'? "Poultice." s The next day the woman called again, and the dialogue was as follows :— "Better?" "Worse." , " More poultice." Tffo days later the woman made another call, and this conversation occurred :— "Better?/' "Well. FeeP" *' Nothing," exclaimed the doctor. " Most sensible woman I ever met ! "
