ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the sounoil of the Otftgo Acclimatisation Sooiety was held at the office of the secretary, Exchange Court, on Monday afternoon, and attended by „ Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), J. Sinolair Thomson, F. F. Stoddart, A. O. Stronaob, A. C. Begg, R. Campbell, T. Brown, W. 8, Pillans, R. Forrest, F. Deans (maniiger), andD. Russell (secretary).
Manager Deans reported us follows :— " The spawning of the stock fish is nearly concluded* and the result so far has baen very satisfactory, the numbers of ova being : Loch Leveu trotdj, 56,200 ; Scotch burn trout;, 168,400 ; brook trou", 72,000; and salmon, 39,600. The rainbow trout are nearly two yean old, but there will bfi no increase from them this teason. Mr Campbell, of the Southland Acclimatisation Society, and I netted the estuary of the Aparhna a few days ago for salmon and oaught several specimen! of what were evidently the same class of fiih caught, by us on former occasions. Some of the fish were sent to several New Zealand experts, and one to Dr Guuther, in England. On this occasion we kept only one, which I forwarded to the secretary, Mr Russell. The others were returned to the water
It may be remembered that the opinions of out icientifio men' were that they wexe the true Mluion, while Dr Gunther thought they were sea trout."— The report w«s adopted. ' . Mr W; M 'Cor mack, of Tapanni, wrote, offering to catch 50 fallow deer for the loolety at!£3 per head.— lt was resolved that, the writer; be informed that the society would be prepared to take 50 head of deer uninjured. Applications from the Lake Acolimatiiation Society, and Mr L. H. Greenaway, of Manawatu, for supplies of wild rice seed were granted.
