LAKE COUNTY.
Mat 30.— Cold but otherwise fine weather has been the order of the day. Threshing is still going on in several parts of the district, and very good, if not sensational, returns are coming in from many farms. Boot orops, too, are well to the fore, promising an abundant store of fodder for live stock. Cattle and sheep are in prime condition, but there is the usual bcareity of pork and high price for baoon, which ranges from 9d to 10d per Ib. Butter, too, is scarce and dear, although there is a goodly quantity of factory butter imported from Southland hb4. else- j Where. ' i Anglican Church.— Once more the Walcatipu j branch of this church finds itself without a pastor, i $he Ja,te- incumbent, the Rev. T. Cotes, being Cnticed away to some -more pleasant pastures j than the rough and snowy charge of the lakes and mountains. It is reported that the Rev* A. D. Mitchell, of Wyndham, has been approached with jin offer of the charge, but nothing definite has transpired so far. Political — There are unmistakable signs that a number of electors are itching for a Liberal jK) candidate, but they are of the radical colour, pnd I believe it is safe Jo say are in the minority numerically as well aa.otherwise. Any candidate of that ilk had better carefully feel the pulse of the electors before he commits himself to a canvassing tour of, say, two months, for the Lakes is the largest electorate in New Zealand, extending from the Head of Lnke Wakaiipu to Switeers (Waikaia), in Southland, and from Martin's Bay to Cromwell, containing no less than $7 polling tooths ; so that our member is the dearest member in the House. Loyally Observed.— Monday last, theseventyBeveuth birthday of her Majesty, was loyally observed as a general holiday. The weather being delightfully fine, there were picnics, excursions, Shooting matches, and so forth.
