LAND BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of tha Laud Board was held on Wednesday, when there were present — Messrs J. P. Maitland (chief commissioner), W. Dallas, J. Duncan, H. Clark, and A. M'Kertow. Catlins.— Mr R. Ivimey and fivo others wrote ia regard to road between sections 28 and 49, block I, Oatlins.— Referred to chief surveyor for consideration and report. Rock and Pillar.— The board was requested to authorise the receiver of land revenue to pay over to persons entitled, the amount received as valuation for improvements upon section 2, block 11, Kock and Pillar district.— The receiver was authorised accordingly. Inch-Olutila. — Mr John Dutton wrote requesting to be relieved of his license over eight acres opposite sections 9 and 11, Inch- Clutha district. — The surrender of the lease was accepted. Tuapkka West.— Mr Michael Hunt wrote in regard to the valuation for improvements upon section 18. block 11, Tuapeka West district.— The amount of the valuation was reduced to £5. —— Ranger Hughan reported upon the application of Messrs Stephens and Dalziell for a grazing license Over the unsold sections in block IV, Tuapeka West, and on an application by Mr Andrew Mouat for a license to occupy the unsold sections in blocks I and IV in the same district.— A yearly license under section 116 of tho act was granted to Meisrs Stephens and Dalziell over sections 23, 24, 26, 27, and 29, block IV, Tuapeka West, at Id per. acre, with a license fee of £L Is ; and a yearly 'license under the same section was also granted to Mr Andrew Mouat over sections T, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17; 18, and 19, block I, and sections 32, 34, and 35, block IV, Tuapeka West, a"t Id per acre, with license fee. Waipori. -Mr Donald Campbell, jun., applied . for a license for timber cutting over 15 acres in block X, Waipori district. — A yearly license was granted over the area applied for at 4s per acre, With license fee of £1 Is. Oamaru.— Ranger Hughan reported upon an application by Mrs Agnes Ward to- purchase a small portion of Crown land lying between Landon Creek and the road line in block I. Oamaru district.— A yearly license was granted under section 116 of the act for about an acre, more or less, at nresent occupied by Mrs Ward, at 10s per annum, with a license fee of £1 Is. Tautoku. —Ranger Atkinson reported upon forfeited lease in perpetuity section 32, block IV, Tautuku district.— To be reoffered at former capital value with valuation for improvements, £4. Woodland.— Ranger Atkinson reported upon section 15, block IX, Woodland district, lately ■urrendered by Mr George Winton.— lt was decided that the section be reoffered at a reduced capital value of £2 10s per acre. Arrears of Rent.— The Receiver .of Land Revenue repotted that the following persons whose holdings had been declared forfeited had now paid arrears of rent: — H. MAuley, Julia Dahing, M Robinson, P. Ryan, J. Ryan, Johanna Doyle, and J. A. Orbell. — The resolutions forfeiting the leases and licenses held by the above were rescinded. . ' Gladstone Township.— Ranger Mackenzie reported upon an application by F. Calvert on behalf of William John for a lease over Gladstone township and land between Gladstone and Jones's Creek.— A yearly license was granted under section '116 of the act over about 300 acres, being' unsurveyed portion of Gladstone township, aa shown by Ranger Mackenzie's sketch, at £2 10s per annum, with a license fee. of £l Is. Wauepa.— Ranger Atkinson reported upon Mr^ H. J. Pullnr's application for section 1, block XII, Warepa district.— The application was declined, the section nob being open for application. Lower Wanaka — Ranger Mackenzie reported upon section 23, block XIV, Lower Wanaka, I lately surrendered by John Fitzgerald.— To be Reoffered as a village homestead allotment at a capital value of 20s per acre. Greenvale.— An application by Robert E. Hyde for rural land for cash (section 35, block I, Greenvale district) was approved. Miscellaneous Applications.— The following applications vrere approved :— For rural land on tha occupation with right to purchase system : George Wilson, section 9, block VIII, Tautuku. For village homestead allotments : Robert E. Hyde, section 36, block IV, Greenvale ; Elizabeth O. Eaaie, section 37, same block ; James Reanie, section 42, same block. For rural land under the Land for Settlements Act : J. J. L. Abernothy, allotment 13, block XUI, Pomahaka Downs estate. For transfers of leases : Georga Perry to F. H. Perry, part of. section 24, block I, Blackstone (two Crown grants to issue) ; Robert Crawford to Mrs Lucy Draper, section 37, block VII, Glenomatu district; John M'Phee to Duncan M'Phoe, sections 4 and 5, block I, Nenthorn. To exchange perpetual leases for leases in perpetuity : George Deyenney, section 8, block I, Maniototo ; James Harrison, section 20, block IV, and section 14. block V, Mouut Hyde. Surrenders. — A memo, was read from the Sur-veyor-general in regard to the surreuder by Wm. R. Neville of a small grazing run lease over Ruus 220e and 220f, Tiger Hill, and the surrender was accepted, and a yearly license issued under clause 116 of the act from March 1 last at a rental of 3d per acre. It was agreed to recommend the Government to authoiise the commissioner to accept the surrender of Wm. Lindsay's lease of sections 7, 10, and 11, block XIII, Benger district, the present rent being in the opinion of the board much too high to allow of profitable occupation. The surrender of Mrs J. lleany's perpetual lease of section 1, block IV, Woodland, was accepted, and the ranger was instructed to make a valuation and suggest a capital value. Teaneuaki.— A letter from Mrs C. Darragh relative to the Canadian thistle on the Teaueraki estate was received. Maerewhenua.— A letter was read from Mr C. F. Roberts relative to the survey of occupation leases at Maerewhenua, and. asking that the lent period be delayed.— lt was decided to inform the writer that the surveyors would be on the ground in a few days, and that tbe consideration of the date of the leases, should stand over.— -Mr John Muir applied to have the rent of allotments 38 and 39, Maerewhenua estate, reduced on account of improvements having been removed therefrom. — The board could not see their way to comply with the request. Occupation Leases. - Consideration of" a number of applications for occupation leases in the Tarras district was deferred until next meeting. Hyde —A petition signed by 65 settlers at Hyde was received requesting that sections 51, 52, 51, 55, 57, and 58, block VII, Rock and Pillar district, be withdrawn from sale.— lt was resolved that the sections be withdrawn from sale for the present.

A 10-.-oomed house at Dipton, occupied by Mr A. Jeukins, and incuced for £250 in the South British, was destroyed by fice on Sunday. There was a cover of £50 on the furniture. At the inquest on "Somebody's darling," whose body was found in Dr Collins'a garden, Wellington, a verdict was returned that there was not sufficient evidence to show the cause of death. The efforts of the police to find the mother of the child were unsuccessful. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to inflammation of the langs.
