Why He Saved Him.
=There was an old negro floating in a skiff on a stream in the island of Jamaica. He w*s fishing, { and he had a boy in the boat with him, who kept looking into the water until he lost his balance and disappeared in the water. More quickly than I con Id tell you, the old man had his coat off and dived for the boy. He brought him up all right, and then rowed for the bank. When they got out—dripping, of coura-i —a white man who had seen the whole business complimented the old man on his heroic act. "He must be a son of your*," said the white man. "No, do, sah ; no aon 0' mine." " Nephew, then ? " " No, no, Bah ; no nej-hsw." " Cousin ? " " No ; no cousin." " Thtn you deeerre all the more credit for saving his life." •' Well, I doan' know 'bout tbat, boss. You see, he hid all the bait in his pecket."
