NOTES BY TERROR.

'. * A"»erry Christ ma* to all my readers. •. • " Fancier," of the New Zealand Mail, is, I am sorry to learn, laid low with typhoid fever, ao for a time I shall be unable to quote from his always interesting* and well-selecled columns. lam sure all my readers join me in wishing him a speedy recovery. "." I noticed a few days since a lcc»l ret river fancier with a fox territr puppy ! Is he transferring his attention from the curlies to the terrier type, or does he purpose devoting his attention to both breeds? ' •. • A veterinary visit big Mr Jowetfc's dogs at Poit- Chalmers f-xpressed himself qu: te pleased with their appearance. He states that what some fanciers alleged ta be tnan^e was the result of olesa confinement and want of exercise. The etf amer leaves for L) ttulton before these notes will be published. •. * I hear that a couple more high-class bl»ck early retrievers are b^ohtd for New Zealand from Home. I expf-cb to have full particuhrs •hortly. It seems that the preteut bri eders are to have opposition, which I hope will prove bemficial to the fancy at large. •. " A bitch belonging lo Mr H. A. Bligh, of Wellington, has just visited Mr R. H. Jadd's Laird of WjotniDg, Victmia As the New Zealander is l>y Y"uog Englind, ex Ormsltiik — Starlight, the progeny should prore valuable. •. -Ayr pos of the muzzling laws in Bnglaud. A Neatu Cout.ty butcher, summoned for not LaviDg his dog muzzled, pleaded as a de r ence that the Inspector for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had informed him that he would proceed against him for cruelty if ho muzzled the dog, as it was herding sheep. Notwithstauding that the unfortunate butcher was " between the devil and the deep sea," as it were, the magistrate fined bim lOj. .•. • With HRH. tho Princess of Wales *B patron, and 22 ladies of title as distinguished members, it is of course supeifluons to remark that the Ladies' Kennel Association of England is not only popular but a fashioaable institution. The latest Hit published rfiows that the membership is tow nearlj 350 strong, and that the ladies of England fency every conceivable . brted of dogs, from bull co^s and bloodhounds to pugs f»nd poodles.. Our new friend the Dogne de Bordeaux d es not appear to be represented by an owner willing to acknowledge herself is such so far. Nevertheless I notice that Mrs H. C. Brooke, who registers herself on the ladies' list as fancier of bulldogs and dingoes, showed a " Dogue Guerrier de Bordeaux" at the last Brighten show. I learn that although this dogue appeared amiability itself at the show, the scars on its head bore ttstimony to the fact that at least a few battles had been fought. ,„ *. ' Spesking of "Dogues,'' the Stockkeeper states that this variety is quite the topic of the hour in kennel circ'e3 at Home. *. ' The Ladies' Kennel Journal, for August, . September, and- October devotes many pages .of most interesting mater with illustrations to the snbjest of (jueen Victoria's dogs and kennele. The August issue shows, in addition to several pictures of tbe Queen's kennels, a portrait of Turi, the Queen's latest purchase, a beautiful little white Spitz. Several other beautiful specimens of the same breed are portrayed in the following issue 3, and by a perusal of tho descriptive matter I find that the kennels also contain callics, pugs, schippcrkies, Skyes, and terriers. *. * Forty-eight hour* prior to the Birkenliead show of September 4 and 5 last, the secretary, Mr Edwardson, was in despair at the fact that less than 200 entries had been made. Jndge then his surprise and consternation at receiving more than 1000 additional entries before the time of closing. In view of the fact that a catalogue had to bo prepared, and that -this is no light and ea&y task at any time, I should think that Mr Edwardson wonld have li»d just cause for resigning his responsible and onerous dutus even at the last moment. _ Exhibitors certainly should show more consideration for those working in their interests.
