(LIMITED). - NOTICE to SHAREHOLDERS. — Arrangements have been made for sales of Stock at Burnside, and for Wool, Skins, and produce of all kinds at Dunedin. Notice of consignments, orders for goods, and other correspondence to be addressed to THE SECRETARY, 12d Liverpool street, Dunedin. HOW I ESCAPED DEATH. ■» A TRUE STOKY. It is about 22 years ago now, but I shall never forget it. I was only a youth at the time, and "was living with my parents in Londonderry. ,. I had always been very fond of: experimenting in chemicals, but hitherfo had abyays managed to escape any serious accident. One day, however, I wanted to make some oxygen gas. When buying the necessary ingredients (chlorate of I potash and black oxide of manganese) I noticed that the manganese was not the same as that I had been in the habit of using. The chemist examined it, looked at the label, and insisted that it was all right. I was still inclined to doubt this, but took it, and placing it in the retort prepared to make the gas. It was only on the fire a few moments when a most terrific explosion took place. The retort was blown to pieces, and the contents of the grate thrown over me, burning almost all the skin off my face, and pretty closely cropping my head. . The pain was fearful. We obtained some Gordon's, Universal Ointment, this was applied to my head, and the pain that was so unbearable went away in about 15 minutes ; and in three days I was at my work as usual. On making in- j quires at the chemist's, I found that the oxide had been mixed with sulphide of antimony, which with chlorate of potash makes an exceedingly explosive compound •> that this 4 had occurred in the wholesale house in Liverpool, and also that antimony was a virulent blood-poison. Air Marsden r a resident in Dublin, about the same time for the same purpose got antimony also. He had a similar explosion, and was badly burned. He went to a chemist's, and was dressed in the orthodox way for burns. He died three days afterwards from blood-poisoning. In my case | Gordon's Ointment not only took the j pain away completely, but drew out all the poison.
