Cr. James Harrison. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,— -Tho: c of us acquainted with Cr James Harrison know him to be a good judge of a " coo," a canny hand at driving a good Scotcli bargain, and a man who " does not sell his hens on a rainy day " ; but when he sets himself up as a mining critic his Scotch caution seems to desert him and he flounders helplessly. Mr Ham on does not live in a mining district, does not represent miners, has no practical experience himself, and very few opportunities of rubbing shoulders with those who have. Writing as one who knows something of Mr Christian I h^ve no hesitation in asserting that he is a thoroughly practical man. It is' not long ago since I travelled with him and Mr Lorie when they were coming up by train to visit Tim c O'clock, and on that occasion Mr Chiistian wa-i bravely goiDg out to face the arduous journey to Three O'clock notwithstanding the fact that he had not been in his bed for several nights owing to sickness in his family. All this Mr Chiistian does without fee or reward, and with no ostentation, yet he has to submit to such unwarranted and "below-the-belt" criticism as that levelled at him by Cr Ilarrison. Of one thing Mr Christian may be certain, he will survive all such cowardly attacks, while Cr Harrison's reputation is not likely to be enhanced in value by the manner of his methods when on the stump.— l am, &c, New Zeamnder.
