Monday, November 25. On Friday afternoon Mrs Ogston gava a large "At home" at her residence, High street , as a farewell to her sister-in-law, Mrs J; P. Ridings. - The afternoon was excessively wet, consequently not so many ladies put in an appearance as would otherwise have been the case. Mrs Ogston received her guests in the drawiDg room and tea was served in tbe dining room, the table being exquisitely and artistically decorated with great quantities of wild yellow buttercups in high vases. During the afternoon there was some very good music in tbe drawing room. Mrs Theomln sarg two or three times, and Mise Roberta and Miss MLcan also rendered vocal solos. Amongst those present were Mrs Sband, Mrs Turton, Mrs A*. Bathgate, Mrs Steph«nson, Mrs Mtitland, Mrs Stilling, Mra and Miss Graham, Mi&s Bußck, Mm and Miss Moodie, Mrs G. Moodie, Miss Gether, Mrs Galloway, Mrs Denniston, Mrs Fincb, Mrs Perston, Mies Platts, and Mrs Gow. Mrs Ogston wore a pretty gown of black crepon trimmed elaborately. with jet and ribbon ; Mra Riding*, handsome black silk ; Mrs J. P. Ripicgs, a gown of nut-brown cloth with yoke of velvet, large hat with feathers ; Mrs Butterworth, a very stylish costume of black crtpon, large sleeves, and. trimmings of blue chiffon, small bonnet of bi&cuit-coloured straw ; Mrs Melland, black, serge, the bodice trimmed with bands of yellow silk veiled in black laca; Mrs Tower, a handsome costume of black crepon with bodice composed of chiffon trimmed with white satin ribbon, small black bonnet relieved with white; Mrs Cameron, tobac brown dress trimmed with brown eatin and passementerie, small brown bonnet ; Mrs Tbeomin, a smart gown of black silk trimmed with moire and jet, small black bonnet trimmed with cornflower blue velvet and flowers; Mrs Fox, navy blue serge costume, pale blue vest and lace collar; Mrs J. Allan, tailor-made gown of navy blue clotb, checked vest, and black and white toreador hat ; Miss Webster, green cloth costume ; Miss G. Webster, green cloth dress with yoke of red velvet trimmed with jet ; Miss M'Lean, smart gown of black cloth with sleeveless bodice of tan-coloured cW.h ; Miss P. Gibson, brown cloth trimmed wiib biown braided velvet; Miss A. Roberts, black crepon ; Miss Reynolds, black serge ; Mrs Haggitt, dress and cape of° black crepon, small bonnet of black and yellow ; Mrs Os'.way, dress of green cloth with yoke of yellow lace, small brown bonnet relieved with purple and green flowers ; Mrs ColquhouD, grey and black cloth; Miss K. Battray, green cloth with yoke of white brocaded silk, green hat ; Mies T. Rattray, black crepon, black hat with chiffon and flowers ; Mrs Fergus, black crepon with bodice composed of white silk veiled in chiffon; Mrs Postlethwaite, black orepoa skirt and black and grey striped silk bodice.

A number of strangers are visiting Dunedin at present for tbe races and show, both of which are to be held this week. M!s3 Gould, from Cbristchurcb, is visiting her sister, Mrs Sinclair- Thomson, Lees street; Miss Bell, Southland, is staying with Mrs Gibson at Anderson's Bay; Miss Cunningbam, Cbriatchurcb, is the gue3t of Mrs J. M. Ritchie, Queen street ; Mrs Ouningham Bmith is also a visitor to Danedin ; and Miss Menlove, Oamaru, is staying with Mrs Stephenson, Lees street.

. Some of our own residents have also returned from their sojourns abroad. Miss Gibson has returned after a prolonged visit to Christchuroh and Wellington; Mr and

Mra Hubert Turabull, of Liubura station, returned with their family from England by B.s. GotMc ; Mr and Mrs Lintott have returned from Sydney after a short visit to that lovely city ; and Miss Tui Stephenson has returned from her trip to Christ church and Oamaru. Mr and Mrs Henry Mackenzie left last week for Wellington, where tb<.*y are going to rebide in future. Volume XIV of Mrs Leach'a Fancy Work Basket comes in the nick of time for a Christmas box, a purpose for which it is eminently fitted. What young girl would not be delighted to receive a volume in hand bound cover* containing 250 ussful and ornamental designs of every conceivable kind in wool work, and yec here we have it, and at a cost of only half a crown.
