A CULTIVATOR AND LIME SOWING MACHINE.
About 30 gentlemen interested in agricultural matters attended on Thursday a trial of a now mr.cnine for aowit'g lime invented by Mr T. H. Lawience, avd the property of the Lliiiss^y-Hitrris Co. Tho trial took place in a paddock at the rear of Ontlow House. Among those present were Messrs T. Brydone, G. L. Sise, W. A. Shields (manager of the MasseyHarris Co.), J. Stephenson, A. Brown, 11. Campbell (Scotland), C. E. Hardy (Cbristchurcb), G. Todd, O. S. Reid, J. White, A. Smith jun , R. Charter*, J. Duthie, J. Shiel, W. D. Allen (Titnaru), T. Hastio, E. S. Baldwin, E. F. Duthie, and others. Hitherto there has baen cousiderable difficulty in Bowing artiflcial manures and lime -by machinery on account of the feeders either becoming ohoked when the manure is damp or when the lime is in hard lumps, or being broken when any herd substance, such as a stone, found ita way into the mochani'-m In the machine under notice (which is a local inversion that has been purchased by the Mos<<y Huris Company) provision is made for ovcici'inirg these difficulties. At. other advantage da ; med for it is that the supply of lime can be regulated to suit the rcquireifltute of the ground. Under the old arraDgn_er.t of spreading the lime by mean* of shovels a large quantity had to be used, but if a , farmer so desires he need not put on more than ?- .ouple of hundredweight to tho acre by using '"this machine. Four horses and one man are requirod for the pror-cr working of the machine, and the experts present at the trial were uuanimoua in the opiolon t_at the invention is a
vtlu-iblo one. Tho ground bad been previously measured aud the lime weighed, and tho tr'al oleftrly showed that the machine was capisb'.e of dexlmg with quantities ranging from lOowt per acre to 36uwt.
