ARRIVAL OF THE BORROWDALE,
The ship Borrowdale, arrived on Sunday evening. f-he comes into port bearing evident signs of the heavy weather sht has encountered. On August 15 she met a Btrong westerly g^le, attended by heavy hai Equalls and high sea, during which she shipped large quantities of water, causing the vessel to roll and Blrain heavily. Oil bags were thrown over, and on the following morning the gale increased to hurricane force with high mcuutainoua seaa, which continually broke on board, filling the main deck, started several of the stanchions, and breaking five on the after Btarboard bulwarks, bent and Btrained the after boat skids, carried away tho whole of the starboard side and two-third 3 of the fore part of tho after deck* house, completely gutting the saloon, captain and officers' rooms and pantry, and injuring the second officer. All the meteorological and navigational instrument^, charts, medicine chtst, and captain and officers* effects were either lost or destroyed. The water found its way down the lazarette and damaged the ship's stores, and it also went down Ihe after hold. Aa soon as possible all hands were employed clearing up the wreck aud temporarily repairing th« after house and ealoon, when it wa3 found that the barometer and sextant were destroyed, one chronometer stopped, and the other one damaged with salt water. Charts and (ship's papera were also found to be greatly damaged. Heavy gales were met during the whole of the passage acrorß the Southern Ocean, notwithstanding which she has made tbo passape In 99 days. She brinss some 2200 tons< of cb. v po, about one half b 'ing for IHine liv and the r in tin lcr for Lyttelton.
