Skptkmiikii 23.— Mr Thomas Knowles, of Tahatika, died in the Dunedin Hospital on Sunday, September 15, after a short illness. Mr Knowles leaves a family of five, who are now without father or mother, since Mrs Kuowles died a few months ago. Groat sympathy in felt for them under their trying circumstances. Mr Kuowles was about 50 years of ape. and until recently ho bad every appeoranco of -=being a strong — indeed, powerful — nmn Ho held the positious of J.P. and member of the Ciutha Count y Council. Educational.— At a meeting of householder*, hold on Monday, September 16, the following members were elected as a school committee :— Messrs David Wrutten, Alexander Adam, George Dabinett, Samuel Young, Robert Crewa, William Wingfield, and Peter Abtrnethy. A good many other candidates were nominated, but failed to secure office. At a meeting of tho committee held immediately afterward* Mr Dabinett was appointed chairm»n and Mr D. Wratten secretary. It wai agreed to congratulate Mr Bryant on having introduced Bible reading into the school, and to assure him of the hearty support of the committee in all his efforts for the moral welfare of the pupils. Railway.— The railway works are progressing favouiably. It is a great convenience for settlers to be able to avail themselves of the ball*st tiain, and by paying ordinary fare travel to Bilcluth» and back any day except Sunday.
