ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

Dr Will has sent to the secretary of the centre the following report on the examination of the women's class at Bast Taieri :—: — " The following have passed the examination of the women's first aid class at East Taieri : Miss Agnes Allan, Mils Elizabeth Barclay, Mrs J. Christie, Miss E. Chmtie, Mrs Sarah Hicks, Mrs A. Inglis, Miss Jane Inglie, Miss Margaret Ingljß, Miss Agnes Law, Miss Catherine M'Lachlan, Miss Jane M'Kay, Mi»s Belle M'Kay, Miss Lizzie M'Kay, Miss Elizabeth PraiD, Mrs E. Turnbull, Miss Louis* Redman, Miss Blsie Swallow, Miss Sueau Swallow, Miss Louisa Will, Miss M. J. William*. Out of the 21 who attended the examination, only one failed, a very satisfactory result which must have been verr pleasiug to the lecturer, Dr Allan, who had evidently taken a great deal .of pains to instruct the cites thoroughly and well. The examination took place on the first night of the snowstorm, and it speaks btrongly for the enthusiasm of the olast tbat so many turned out to the examination."

The ladies' class met in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening for practice in bandaging, under the direction of their instructor, Dr Sutherland. There was a very large attendance, notwithstanding the suqw. — Bruce Herald.

The examination of the M> sgiel women's class was conducted by Dr Will on Wednesday, and although the results have not been formally announced, we understand that the examiner was well satisfied, and it is expected that the percentage of passes will not be far short of 100.

Mr T. Andrew was called to the chair, and briefly explained the purpose of the meeting. After the question had been fully discussed, and the utility of such a society as th*t contemplated expatiated upon, the establishment of a branch of the Ambul*nce Association was heartily agreed to. Nor was there any difficulty in the matter of membership, all present, with the exception of two ladies, enrolling as. members. The following were appointed a earn mi t tee to make arrnngemt-nts in connection with the holding of the daises : — Messrs T. Andrew (chairman), E. Haiues (treasurer), F. Jtffery (secretary), R. Cockburu, J. Bennetts, and C. Couper Dr Mullin exprofsed bis" readiness to undertake the duty of lecturer to a ladies' class if one could be formed. He also thought he could arrange with fome other medical gentleman to examine tbe clasies. A large number of ladies have expressed their intentisn of taking advantage of Dr MuJlin's offer. The class for men will mett on Friday next, and for the other sex on the following (Saturday) afternoon. It may be nieutioned that au apology was received from Mr James Elliott for his unavoidable absence from the meeting, and expressing his sympathy with the object in view.

The examination of the men's class ab Naseby, which is now being instructed by Dr Church, will shortly be conducted by Dr Shields (of Hyde).

Tho local paper says that Dr Sutherland delivered his final lecture to men in the Council Chambers, Milton, on Friday evening, when tbe subject was " Stretcher Drill and Modes of Carrying the Injured." At the close .of the lecture the members were given some practical instruction. The ladies' class meets - for practice to-morrow night.

Dr Fleming was presented by the ladies' ambulance clans with a complete set of George Eiiot's works and a silver-mounted riding whip suitably ineoribed, "as a token^ of their appreciation of his kindness and patience in conneotiou with the class." The doctor thanked then heartily for their valuable present, and said he would always remember with pleasure the keen interest they had taken in the work of the class. He congratulated them very heartily on their success in the searching examination they had gone through, every one of them having passed, and said he had no doubt they would, if necessary, put the knowledge they had obtained to a practical use. — Clutha Leader.

On Tuesday evening last Dr Church lectured in the session house of the Presbyterian Church on poisoning, drowning, and insensibility. There was a good attendance of members of the Ambulance Association, and the lecture, which was the most interesting of the stries, wai lisfcenfld to attentively throughout. At the conclusion the doctor showed a number of interesting experiments illustrative of chemical action. — Naseby Chronicle.

The fifth lecture of the Lawrence branch of the association was delivered on Thursday evening last by Dr Newell in Trinity Church Schoolroom, there beiDg a very good a* tendance. The lecturer in the first place reviewed the previous lecture, and then proceeded to describe the method of removing the sick or injured by bearers and by means of stretchers. The class then practised the different methods of using the stretcher, the means of obviating difficulties, and the general methods to be observed in oartying and relieving the injured. — Tuapeka Times.

At the Young Women's Christian A* sociation Rooms on Thursday evening Dr Will delivered the second lecture of the course on " Home Nursing and Hygiene." There was a large attendance of members, and the lecturer took up the general subject of ventilation. He first dealt with the process of oxidat'on, and then passed on to the selection of the sick room, giving full instructions as to the points to be considered. The regulation of the temperature of the room for the different diseases was explained, and the choice of bed, the furnishing, and the decoration of the sick room respectively referred to. The lecture was followed by about an hour's practice in roller bandaging. Dr Will at his next lecture will deal with infectious diseases and their treatment.

It is expected that & course of lectures on nursing will be arranged in connection with the Moagiel branch of the 'association.

The examination of the men's first-aid class, which Dr Stenhouse had instructed in the city, took place last evening at the Y.W.G.A. Rooms. The examiners (Dre Scott and Barnett) had a goodly number of candidate* to pats through their hands, all the members of the class, with bat one or two exceptions, patting ia the

examination. Dr Stenhonse has kindly stated his intention of presenting all those who pass with a copy of his recent publication on the ear*nd throat. •
