A DASTARDLY ACT.
Brisbane, July 22. Details have been received of the wholesale poisoning of. shearers at Bowen Downs. Eight men were poisoned in the first batch and 49 in the seoond. The crime was effected by mixing arse&ic in the bread and in a meat padding. Ad eye- witness describes the scene as horrible ; men writhing about in every direotion. One man died, and others are in a dangerous condition. The police have been despatched to the scene.
Last year Bowen Downs was concerned in the strike difficulties, and many free labourers were taken on, and are still retained. The perpetrators of the crime are as yet tin traced.
