EIGHT MEN KILLED.
Sydney, July 18.
- A terrible .catastrophe occurred in the South Broken Hill mine this afternoon.- The day shift was engaged at the 400 ft level on the sulphides slopes, and as the ground looked dangerous the men were called out. They retired to what was regarded as a safe position, when an immense fall of earth took place. The men were safe from this, but the pressure of the falliog mass caused a terrific blast of air, which threw the men about like nloe pins, dashing them against the timber with great violence. On inspection it was found eight men had been killed and two severely injured. The names of those killed are Tremback, Nelson, Snell, Baarce, Lee, Holmes, Arthur, and MLeish. With tbe exception of M'Leish, the deceased leave wives and families. July 21. The manager of the South Broken Hill mine attributes the recent accident to the presence of gas in the ore, the pressure cansiDg a collapse. The evidence adduced at the inquest showed that the men were warned in plenty of time to escape, but thought they were safe, and remained chatting and smoking. The verdict returned was tbat the disaster was accidental, and no blame was attached to any person.
