DRAUGHTS MATCHES.

GORB v. Matauiu. ' On Wednesday,' thelOth instJ, a- friendly niatcil was played between 12 members each of the Gore and Mataura 'Cheeß and Draughts Clubs. Play commenced at 8 p.m. and ceased at 10 p.m. The table below will show the result, and although Gore scored high, there were some well-contested games, as may be seen from the fact that out of 12 pairs p laying' no less than five played but two games during the two hours that the match lasted. Scores :—

At the conclusion of the match, which was played in the large dining room of Mra Gleeson's establishment, ample justice was done to the very nice supper provided.

Woodlands v. Wyndham. A very interesting match cf 18 players a-sido was played at "W yndhum on the 18th. It is surprising to find that a small place lika Woodlands can torn out a team of 18 so strong as to run within four wins of drawing with WynUham — one of the strongest, if not the strongest, teams in Southland. Yet such is the case, and it speaks well for their pluck and energy. A quartet bucli as Messrs Ayson, Sounees, Oughton, and Marsh at the head of a team is enough to dishearten mo->t teams, and their opponents in this match are to be congratulated on, the stand they made. Thi-i was the fiist meeting of Wyndham and Woodlands, and there is no sayingrwbat the result of the next match may be. The following are the scores :—

After vlay was over the teams adjourned to Host Miloe's, where a very pleasant hour was spent, Mr A. Stowart occupying the chair. Mesors Hiddleston and Berry (Wooolandu) and Ayson and Marsh (Wyndharo) wero the speakers, "while the vocal items came from JWeas'vs Wallcer, Bigwood, Barker, Nicholson, Bell, Simpson, and Cuthbert, and recitations from Mesnrj Bigwood and Ayson. 7 he captains of the teams wereMeßsrs Stewart (Wyndham) and Berry (Woodlands).
