CHRONICLES OF CROMWELL.

The first races at Cromwell were held in 1867. Oa September 13 cf that year a public meeting was held in Mr Kidd's Cromwell Hotel, Mr G. W. Gooo*ger in the chair, when ib wes decided on the motion of Mr P. Kelly, seconded by Mr Kidd, that Crcmwell races take place on December 26 and 27 1867. The cvinuaifctee appointed to carry •ut this proposal were Messrs P. Kelly, J. Fleming, R. Kidd, G. W. G .odger, J. Koewdson, R. Loughnan, W. Smithum, J. Richards, B. Duhig, W. Shanley, J. Perriam, J. W. Thompson, J. Ashworth, W Norman, R. Colclough, and 'J. Haliiday, with power to add to their number. At a meeting held ou October 16, the nature of Messrs M. -Donlm, W. J. Barry, and H. S. Thomson (Wauak*) wera added to the committee ; Mr Wen. Keau was requested to act as hon. secretary, Mr Wm. Grumroitt was appointed treasurer, and Mesers Smitham, Ashworth, Kelly, Fleming, and Conlin were elected a committee to draw up the programme. No races were held in 1868, but in the following year a meeting waa g.)t up for St. Patrick's Day, in connection with which Messrs Presbaw aud Smitham seem to have acted as leading promoteis. The stewards were Messrs Dagg, Preshaw, Louyhnan, Smitham, Co .van, Dawkirs, and M'Morran ; the treaturtrfihip being undertaken by Mr Preshaw, and Mr Dagg acting as secntary. At a committee mreViug held on March 10 it was reported th^t £77 odd hid been collected, and that £90 odd had been promised, but was tt'<ll outstanding. On July 9, 1869, a public meeting was held for the purpose of forming a jockey club for the Cromwell district This was accordingly done, the club now in existence being then and there formed. At a meeting on August 9 the following officers wtra appointed: — Presidc-nt, Mr SmMiana ; vice-preeident, Mr Loughnan ; lecretary, Mr Dagg; treasurer, Mr Preshaw. Arrangements were shortly made for a race meeting to bo held on December 30 and 31, and tho tiiiiir was pretty forward when Mr Dagg intimated that he was too much oscupifd iv business to attend to the secretarial duties, aud asked to b<j relieved of the oflbe. This was done, and Mr George Jenour appointed in his place. The handicapping was entrujted to Messrs Wrightson, Grindley, and Fraser. A back meeting was held on September 5, 1871, »t which the chief event — the handicap of 20sovs, ova mile and a-half — was won by Goodman's Gazelle 8 12, ridden by Lang ; Smitham's Hip 9 2 being second, and Hazlett's Maniototo 7.6 third. A stcand day's race 3 followed, but the results are of uo interest;. On September 25 Mr Williams was superseded iv the secretaryship by Mr M'N&b.
