LAKE COUNTY.

Mat 18. — Fires are coming into general favour, especially at nights and at mornings with thos.e who have the farihty for enjoying them at that early part of the day. For a couple of wci ks past there has been an abundance of mut aud clouds, a state of affairs we are nut at all accustomed to. The general character of our climate is ttuly Italian. Sunny skies summer ond winter, and especially in winter, arc ihe order uf the day, and if there is a sp<- 11 of nasty weather it only tends to make us lelish the eunf-hine, which, if it were always with tia, would become monotonous. Downright "cussed" bad weather seldom lasts longer with us than a day and a-half at a time. Political.— Mr Fraser, our M.H X., scored another success at Queeustown last Satin day night, meeting a large and representative assembly o) electors at the Queenbtown Town Hall. Many of those present came from loug distance*. After an atteutive and interested hearing, Mr Fiaser was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence on the motion of Mes-rs L Hotop and D. M'Bride, ths vote being carried with acclamation. Mr Fraser re ponded in suitable terms. The address was matked by its plain common-sense expressions of feeling, clothed in appropriate language. There can be no doubt that Mr Fr^er is developing as a representative, and that he will wear well and will last until worn out, which it is to be hoped will not be in a hurry. Fatal Accident— On Wednesday afternoon last Mr Samuel Oldfield lefc Queenstown in charge of one of Mr T. Murray's waggons, drawn by a bix-lioroe team, for the mill at Hayes's creek, near Arrowtown. The team reached its dtstination on tbe same evening, with one of the horses dead in its harness. The driver not putting in an appearance, it was supposed that some business had delayed him and the team had got aw«y. Next morning, however, the body of the uufortunate man was found upon the Fiankton road, halfway between the Shotover and Lnke Hayes, life being quite extinct. The fact of the break of the waggon being hard down, and Mr OMrinM's body lying across the track of the waggon wheels, would indicate that he had not fallen off his seat, nor was the body in any way inju cd. Under these circumstances it is conje-tured that death resulted from heart disease. The funeral took place this afternoon, and was numerously attended. Deceased leaves a widow and a mostly grown-up family. Death. — A very sad death occurred at Macetown on Tuesday hst, when the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs It. Gilmour, 20 yearn of age, suddenly succumbed after having been ailing from influenza for some time. Universal sympathy is felt for tho bereaved parents and family. A large cortege followed the remains of the diseased to their list resting place in the Arrow cemetery. Retiring i'hom Okfick.— Mr Warden Wood, who, by the way, was tbe first warden appointed to preside over this district, retires from his positiou after a Jong and arduous course of magisterial duty. Mr Warden Rawson ia the retiring officer's successor. While on this subject it may be mooted that a resident magistrate a»d warden could find ample employment in these parts visiting outlying districts periodically and holding weekly couit3 at Queenstown and Arrowtowu Scene in Court.— At the last Bitting of tho Warden's Court at Arrowtown a mining agent who had recently been couvicted on 11 separate charges of df-f rauding the funds of a local chantable institution appeared in the pursuit of his vocation, when Mr Wesley Turtou, solicitor, of Queen»town, rose to object to the appearance, in question of the agent out of respect for his profession and in behalf of the other agents registered at the same court. As a matter of course Mr Warden Wood, who presided, upheld the objection, giving the agent the option of resigniug.
