THE LAND BALLOT,

The balloting for the subdivision of what was run 206f, part of Taieri Lake station, took place at the Land Board Office on Thursday, and Wf 8 attended by a considtrable number of persons who represented upwards of 400 applic-.nts. As will be seen from the names whole families applied for the same section, the objeel being to make the chances of one gatting it as favourable as possible. Altogether there were 420 applicants, but the bulk of the applications were for two sections — sections 10 and 14, block Xll— the competition for the other sections being by no means extraordinary. The ballot was conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr J. P. Maitlaud), and Mr J. M. Maisey was chosen and officiated as scrutineer. Of course there

was a good deal of PAippieesed excitement durifg the hour and a-half that was occupied by the balloting, and necessarily the bulk of the applicants were disappointed.
