Thompson, Premier of Canada, while tieing conveyed from Windsor Castle to the railway station en rout* to Canada, were accorded a semi-State funeral. The Queen sent si splendid laurel wreath, to which wa« attached an autograph card expi* Bfcing her Borrow at the death of the esteemed statesman. The body will be taken to Canada on board a British warship. Deceased will be buried at Halifax, and will be accorded a State funeral. The Times sayn there is no one in the Canadian Legislature ablt to comm; nd the roraf; amount of confidence as the late Sir J. S. D. Thompson. Ottawa, December 14. A national subscription is being raistd for the family of the late Sir J. S. D. Thompson. Tbe Hon. Mackenzie Bowell has been bummoned to take charge of the Gover&meut.
The Championship events in connection wifh the Wellington Amateur Athletic AsHnfi*tion were got off on the 12 r h, The 440yde Hn-dlei was won by F. Harley in 64aec; the 250 yds Flat by P. J. Nathan in 28 4- 6seo. The Threemile Flat was won by F C. Angell, a. youth still in his teens, who covered the dista cc in 16miu OJsec. The Half-mile Flat was won by A. M. Stuart. Mr R. M'Donald Scott has written to the Minister for Mines proposing the formation of a company to take advantage of tbe Government subsidy for deep level prospecting at the Thames, | raising the capital of £120,000 by means of a j lottery. An act of Parliament would have to be passed before this could be done, and Ministers i look unfavourably on the scheme. Messrs Charles Begg and 00. send us a couple of very handsome celluloid pocket calenders issued by the farm as agents for the Collai a pianos.
