Notes from Wakatipu. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Abrowtown, October 27.— That bugbear and puzzle to miners, tho Roaring Billy, or the Soho Creek of the maps, is once more attracting the attention of prospectors. Messrs Linwood Bros, and j\ Maley nave decided to give this locality anSther trial. Surrounded on all sides by goldbearing country, the Roaring Billy cieok has so zar declined to give up its treusuros if it really contains any. Many havo beou the attempts to find gold in payable quantities in this locality, fending in bovo disappointments. Ho\vover. it is to be hoped that the party spoken of will be more fortunate than their predecessors, and will thus repair tho evil fame of the Roaring Billy creek. Occupation licenses are coming into favour with settlors in these parts, and arc doing a groat deal of good to families on the goldfielde. The AchMes Goldtields Company, Bullendalo, are now again in full working order. An additional number of men have been put on, which in itself speaks well for tho mine.

Notes from Roxburgh. (From Our Own Correspondent.) October 24 — Uur dredges and claims are all in full work. The river is at a low level, and in most cases good returns aro being obtained, with very fair dividends for the shareholders. The Roxburgh Amalgamated's proepectß are very good indeed— £7so a- month for the past four months haß been paid in dividends. Apparently this run of ground will last for a lontj time. Sir Peters, tbe manager, is a first-class man, and Works everything to the bott advantage. About 27 men are employed in this claim. Iheir dam, Lake Onslow, Is full with several months' water conserved in it. The smaller companies of miners at Roxburgh East are working with payable results. Up Goal Creek way the Dunedin Company's dredge is undergoing some repairs. This dredge has worked a large piece of the river bed in the past five months with good payable returns, although the dredge must lift 20ft of tailings before it can touch tho wa^hdirt. Mr M'Lay, the dredgewaster, i« one of the best managers in Otago. Apparently there is a run of good golden ground going up the river. The small river bank claim owners about Coal Creek make good wages. There is an abundance of water for sluicing thiß season. There are two new ventures well worthy of support about to be started— Xl. M. Smith and Co. a dredge at M'Ketizle'sbeaoh, two miles above Coal Creek, and the Pleasant valley alluvial claim, close by. The shareholders nave been working an old river bed, but find it is too deep for ordinary sluicing. They are about to adopt the hydraulic elevating plant, which will no doubt prove successful. In reading' the report of our Mines department I was surprised to see the largo tract of auriferous country between Roxburgh and Nokom»i not described. There is untold wealth. locked up in the Pomahaka, Waikaia, and other gold leads, pesides the undisturbed quartz veins in the mountains. I shall describe some of the returns and prospects obtained there at some future time.
