DRAUGHTS ITEMS.

Brodie's Testimonial.— We are very pleased to acknowledge the following sum towards providing some suitable testimonial for Mr Brodie in recognition of his honourable position as first champion of New Zealand :—

Subscriptions per W. Body, ... 10s We have no doubt tbe above sum will quickly be augmented, and subscribers might forward their idea of what form the memento should take. This list will be kept open till November 30, when the moneys subscribed can be dealt with by a committee of Duuedin subscribers, guided by the wMies of the majority. Subscriptions will be acknowledged in this column.

Temuka —The match at draughts for a stike between Messrs A. Beck (^eadown) and J. Sim (Temuka) is now finished, beinir won by the latter. It will be remembered that the conditions were 20 games, nominated openings, wins and draws to count, each player to nominate five openings. The match attracted a good deal of attention locally, and each evening a large number of spectators attended the Mechanics' Instituto while play was in progress. The match was well contested. At first Heck had slightly the advantage of the play, but eventually bim forged ahead, and tha final score stands— Sim 8 wins, Buck 4 wins, draws 5, and three games not played. It will be noticed that there is a binall proportion of draws. This may be partly accounted for by the fact that nearly all the games were fought out on unfamiliar lines, as will be seen from the play. The game is likely to go ahead in this district.— Correspondent.

A Chance for a Record.— A year or so back we mentioned the case of a man at Home who suggested playing a few games by correspondence with any, New Zealand opponent. Nothing came of it, however, and to the best of our knowledge no games have ever been played over such a distance. But a chance to put up a distance record is now open, as a correspondent of the Liverpool Mercury proclaims himself open for engagement with any New Zealand lover of the game. No doubt the Home player is a hale, hearty individual, with a large heart and liberal mind, who expects to be very full of years before he is fathered to his forefathers ; at anyrate, we should like to see his desire gratified, and if any reader of this column feoh disposed to accommodate him, we shall willingly forward name and address to the Mercury. First come, of course, first served, and the name may as well be accompanied by the first moves of a number of games.

I Answers to Correspondents. j. s.— Would be obliged for more of the games, certainly. Thanks for f.ivour. N. C. N., Temuka.— Thanks for itoni3.
