AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taihoa.

Auckland, August 7. BSeeing that Despised is for the National Hurdles I shall give my pick right out — Nanakia for Steeples and Liberator for the Hurdles. The A.R.G. has held its annual meeting, and the worthy secretary had a surplus of over £400 to announce. Great surprise was expressed at the election of committeemen. Mr Thompson, who at present is in England, and Mr Gorrie, an auctioneer, beat Mr Alfred Kidd in a walk. Poor old "St. Hippo" went down. To get new blood on the A.R.C. committee is like trying to get a camel through the eye of a needle. _ ""Referring to Mr Kidd I may mention that his colt by Tasman from Rubina is furnishing well, but I would prefer to see him lengthen out more. As it is, he appears to have grown up only. St. ' Regal, a two-year-old by St. Leger from Friendship, has clipped the wings of all the two-year-olds at Kllerslie. Three furlongs on the tan in 39sec is not bad going. I fancy his trainer is a bit foolhardy if he pursues this game, as the tan gallop is awfully rotten— in fact, within the last few days the two-year-olds have been allowed to work on the course proper. St. Kilda, our best welter horse and also a daisy over the sticks, has been the subject cf much argument as to whether he or St. Clements could excel over five furlougs on the flat. I would like to see Hippomenes and another make a fourhanded game of it with 9.0 up. Believe mo, they would have to break liuin 2sec to win. For the New Zealand Cup Monte Carlo U a very strong tip up here. Impulse is doing real good work. Pegasus is only pottering along, but will be all there at the day. Harrison is very sweet on his chance. Lotti«, I think, is out-classed. The Waikato Club has decided to include hack races in its programme. Mr J. B. Williamson tells me that out of 10 youngsters h«* handled last year none are good enough for Ellerslie, but if hack races' on the lines of Hawera were instituted he might be able to place them to earn their oats. I hope that J. 8., who is a food plucky buyer, will be able to force his convictions on the club.
