MR BALLANCE'S DYING WISH.
Napier, August 7.
With reference to Sir Robert Stout's statement at Wanganui on Saturday last, Mr F. C. Fulton writes to the Hawke's Bay Herald is follows :— " On the 15th March 1893 I travelled in the train from Palmerston to Wellington. The Hon. John Ballance was in bsd in a private compartment, but hearing I was on the train sent for me, and we converocdt on various subjects for more than an hour. I expressed my regret at his state of health, and said I was sure if Tie w.^nt back to work it would kill him, and ur^Ld iuui to rtwe at once. I forget whether hu I did, % Ti»ere ia only one man fit to take the place, and that is Sir Robert Stout.' "I know we were quite agreed upon the subject, for I afterwards said, 'Your mantle will descend on Stout, and I hope that, instead of a fiery ohariot, when I return from England I shall find your health restored, and that you will bless me for the good advice I have given you.' Mrs Ballance was present and, I think, overheard our conversation."
