THE LABOUR MARKET
Mr Skene reports under date August 7:— A few stray orders are dropping in at last for farm and station people, but there is much room for improvement, as the ranks of the willing workers increase every day. We are still under a black cloud, and there is no silver lining. What between new laws, taxation, and queer finance, the country is being led a pretty dance. Late wages : Couples £65 and £70 ; ploughmen, 15s, ISs and 20s ; cooks, 20s ; shepherds, nil ; grooms, 15a ; dairy hands, Ss to 12s 6d ; town boys, 5s to 10s ; gardeners neglected — a bad sign.
