Corrnption.
TO THH EDITOR.
Sir, — It is currently reported on good authority in Balclutha that attempts to influence different members of the Balclutha School Committee were made by different members of the Ministry, the Premier included, to the selection of a rector for this school. The person it was attempted to benefit by such influence is, of course, one of those individuals of the right colour, but who has never been able to get a larger school than one with an average attendance of about 60 pupils. Such tactics, if correct, are most dishonourable, and unworthy of persons holding such high and honourable positions of trust in the colony. However, the members of the school committee were not so submissive as the team of 39 which our Premier is accufltomed to drive, for they used their own discretion. When Ministers condescend to attempt to corrupt and influence members of school committees over the appointment of a teacher, what will they not do in matters involving large monetary emoluments ? — I am, &c.
