ROXRURGH.
August o.— The Amalgamated Company's claim on the eastern bank of the river is doing exceedingly well, the last returns being most satisfactory. I have heard of a parcel of shares changing hands ut 6s, a marked improvement on quotations of some time back. The Dunedin and the Roxburgh dredges seem to have got on gold at the same time. The former washed up 83oz last week and the latter 570z for five clays. Shares in the latter are at par, and a better claim docs not exist.
Amusements.— On the evening of Wednesday last a smoke concert was tendered to Mr J. 11. Flower, of the Bank of New Zealand, on the eve of his departure, and a purse of sovereigns was presented to him. The compliment was well deserved, as Mr Flower has in many ways promoted the interests of the district. He carries our hearty good wishes with him to his new district, Hokitika. — On Thursday evening we rolled up to the Athenpeum to the Mutual Improvement Society's social, which was an enjoyable affair — dancing, bones, &c, and light refreshments kindly provided by the ladies of the district. — On Friday night the Wesleyans gave a farewell to Mrs Thomas, who is leaving us for Evans's Flat.
Weather. — The .season is, and has been, exceedingly mild and open.
