FIND OF MAORI RELICS AT HIDE.
j A valuable find of Maori relics was made by Mr R. A. Mathewson last week in a cave near Kour-milo, Hyde. The find consisted chkfly of Maori flaxwork, each piece evincirg the ingenuity aud perseverance of the makers. Oiio of the relics is a very ornamental piece of flaxwork, evidently meant for the dress of a chief ; another is a large piece of fringed work, beautifully executed, and about 9ft in length. There are also some rough cloth, a Maori kit (nicely ornamented) containing two hanks of twine equal to any made by civilised man, and what might have been meant for a handkerchief made of the fibres of some plant. These articles must have lain in their resting place for a considerable time. Fortunately it was a very dry spot, and the articles are consequently beautifully preserved.
