The three placed horses led alternately, all being close together till entering the straight, jumping the last hurdle but one abreast. Melinite and Kapua took the last hurdle together, and coming under whip and >por a desperate finish was witnessed, Kapua just beating Melinite by the shortest of noses, with T Rose a good third. Dainty led for half the distance, with Victrix next, Morag lying about sixth, pulling hard, Afterwards Morag and Victrix went to the front and took the sod wall together, Victrix crossed the double opposite the stand slightly in advance of Morag, Tiritea, and Norton. All the horses were fencing beautifully. Morag led over tbe gorse jump, and from this out was never headed, no alteration taking: place until the double was crossed, where Norton commenced to go up and veiy soon passed Vicbrix. Mnrag had h'x clear lengths of a lead into the straight, and only one brush-work jump to negotiate. This was crossed safely. Norton came very fast, and got within four lengths of thf* big horse. But the fffort was too much, and Clark almost pulled the horse up to a walk, allowing both Oaklands and Victrix to pass him, the former gaining second place. Time, Bmin 138ec. Dividend, £4 17s. Peters's b g Austral, by The Australian, Syrs, 12.0 (Peters) 1 94— Mr Coy le's Kaffir, 12.3 (Taggart) 2 149— Hou J. D. Ormond's Worth, 12 3 (Stowe) 3 Also started :— 23 Tanrekaitai 12.3, 31 Alecto 12.3, 30 1 Pamoana 12.0,70 Tricky Jack 12.0. At the sod wall Austral was the first over, just in front of Tricky Jack, while Alecto came down. At the Becond fence of the double Tricky Jack also came to mother earth, and left Austral with a long command trom Kaffir, Worth being next. No change took place from this point, aud Austral came home an easy winner by 20 lengths from Kaffir, Worth a bad third. These were the only horses that finished. Time, 4min 57sec. Dividend, £10 19s.
