THE CALCUTTA MARKETS.
Messrs Barry and Co., report under date Calcutta, May 25 :— Jute Fabrics. — During the early part the fortnight under review the fall in sterling exchange continued until Is OJd was obtainable for six months credit bills for end of the year ; the rupee price of cornsacks advanced in sympathy to Rs. 28-0-8, but notwithstanding this advance the sterling equivalent was reduced to 4s, and it is to be regretted that colonial buyers did not avail themselves more largely of this opportunity to secure a quantity at so low a figure. A reaction has taken place in exchange and at the same rupee price, which remains very firm, cornsacks cannot be worked under 4s lid per dozen c.f.i. and c. Business to the extent of about 5000 bales has been reported. In woolpacks about 1000 bales of various descriptions have changed hands at about the basis of Re. 1-1-6, or Is 4£d for lljlb packs with loose tops. In bran bags business is reported at Rs. 21-0-0 or 3s per dozen, and sellers ask to-day Rs. 22-0-0 or 3s ltd, though with closing business 3s Oid would probably be accepted. Messrs Balmer, Lawrie, and Co. report under the same date :—
Castor Oil.— Since our last a moderate business has been done for the United Kingdom and the colonies at about two annas higher than our last quotations. Production and stocks are small. Market closes firm We quote to-day London 2nds at Rs. 8-10-0 to Rs. 8-11-0; Liverpool 2nds at Rs. 8-20 to Rs. 8-3-0 : No. 3at Rs. 8-0-0 ; half cases at Rs. 7-12-0, and drums of sgal at Rs. 6-13-6. Free on board.
Table Rice. — In moderate demand and stock being limited, prices close firm. We quote to-day : Seeta at Rs. 4-12-0 ; sifted table at Rs. 4-8-0 ; and cleaned gross at Rs. 4-4-0. Ballam rice : Fair business is passing and market closed firm at Rs. 4-1-0 for No. 1 and Rs. 3-14-6 for No. 2.
