TAPANUI.

July 2.— Mr W. H. Mathieson, of Invercargill, gave his lecture on "A Trip Round the World," with lime-light illustrations, on Wednesday last, in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Sabbath School. Unfortunately the entertainment was poorly patronised, consequently the proceeds were far short of expectations. Mr Mathieaon's lecture was well worth listening to, and as the lantern used was a ftrst-claBS one, the views shown were much above the average ; indeed I understand their cost to the owner was the large sum of £250. Those present were thoroughly satisfied, and requested Mr Mathieson to pay us a return visit. This he will do in the course of a month or so. Those who have not seen the Bhow should avail themselves of the next opportunity, especially as the proceeds are devoted to some charitable purpose Mr Mathieson, during the course of his lecture, contributes several vocal selections, which add variety to the evening's entertainment. Runaway. —On Saturday forenoon a team belonging to Mr W. Abram bolted towards the Flodden at full speed. When about opposite the racecourse one of the horses dropped dead, and this brought the others to a standstill. The loss sustained amounts to £30. Death is attributed to disease of tho heart.

Accident.— On Friday, at Waikoikoi, Mr N. M'Ritchie, of Tapanui, had his buggy upset and completely smashed, and he himself had a very narrow escape. Mr M'Ritchie has been very unfortunate with his buggies. Not very long ago he had one totally destroyed and his horse drowned in the Waipahi river
