FORTROSE.

July 2. — The weather so far has been unusually mild for this season of the year ; in fact, maDy days would pass decent muster for "lovely spring " ones. Still there is yet plenty of time for winter to reassert its sway and to give us a taste of what it is capable of if it can only be got in the humour. _ Agricultuhal.— The mild season has allowed the farmers to push ahead with their ploughing, and they should be able to get their sowing done early in the season. Clearing Sale.— The Ocean View estate has been cut up, and most of it has found purchasers. For this reason it was necessary to have a clearing sale, which was held on Wednesday last. The sale was a most successful one, everything being cleared out at top prices. The Waikawa Koad — The engineer, Mr Withers, is busily engaged laying oif the road from Otara through the bush, via the Six-milo creek, to Waikawa. A large portion of this land has bt-en lately taken up in sections of about 200 acres each, and this road will give the settlers access to their sections. A Send off. — A movement is on foot to suitably bid "good-bye and God-speed" to Mr 11. Templeton, who has been in business here for the last 10 or 11 years. He is about to engage in pastoral purposes, haviDg taken over the Thornhill btation in the Tuturau district. Ploughing M/ucu —The FortroEe Ploughing Match Association held its annual meeting on Saturday night. The outgoing committee reported a credit balance of £5 5* 4d, which was considered satisfactory. Mr It. A. Elliott was elected president for the ensuing year, Mr J. Andei son vicepresident, and Mr J. li. Kidd secretary and treasurer. The match and annual dinner is this year to be held at Pine Bush. Health Note — Whooping cough has not visited this district, but there has been an epidemic of colds here for some time past. Old and yoimg alike have been attacked, in some cases the coughing being very violent and accompanied by vomiting. Winter Mun.— The roads are in their usual winter state. Any formed but not metalled are almost impassable. School Changes —Miss E M. Cameron, who has been pupil teacher in this school for over four years and a-half, has severed her connection with the district, and Miss C. Hannan, of Invercargill, received the appointment to the vacancy. Miss Cameron was presented with a purse of sovereigns on her departure.
