PUBLIC OPINION.
The new banking legislation formed the general topic of conversation on Saturday. In Dunedin the news was received very quietly, and appeared to have little or no effect on business. The general opinion in commercial circles appears to be that the effect will be beneficial to trade and commerce, and will inspire confidence, besides relieving the financial strain which was felt in various portions of the colony.
Our Auckland correspondent telegraphs : — " The news regarding the Bank of New Zealand was receiwd very philosophically, and banking business went on its course as usual, there being no excitement of any kind whatever."
A Christchurch telegram says : — " There was no excitement whatever in regard to the Bank of New Zealand yesterday, and no withdrawals were made. The manager received a number of letters from mercantile men approving of the step taken, and congratulating the Government and bant."
According to a Sydney cablegram the announcement of the passage of the Bank of New Zealand Share Guarantee Bill created, very little et}r there, and, the bp.arae.9fl q\ thq
local branch was even less lively than ÜBUal for a Saturday.
