Alleged Illtreatment of Cattle. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib,— As secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, my attention was called to a letter which appeared in your columns on the 20th inst. with respect to the treatment of cattle from the Tasmania steamer, but even before that I had heard ef the matter.
After very full investigation by the inspector, who interviewed 16 persons who were on the wharf at the time, the result of the inquiry was put before one of the honorary solicitors of the society, who writes as follows: — "At your request I have carefully considered the report of Inspector Aitken, founded upon the evidence in connection with the discharge of oattle from the s.s. Tasmania, and am of opinion that the report does not justify any interference on the part of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals." From the evidence, it seems that the cattle must have been trampled on in the hold during the voyage, but that neither of them had a broken leg. The injured beasts were taken to Burnside in the railway trucks and killed. Permit me to thank the writer of the letter, and to (say that the inspector will at all times investigate any case of supposed cruelty which may be reported either through the press or direct to this offioe. — I am, &c, Dunedin, June 28. B. Quick, Hon. See.
