UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the University Council, held on Monday afternoon, was attended by the Chancellor (his Honor Mr Justice Williams), the Vice-chanoellor (Mr E. B. Cargill), Dr Burns, the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, Messrs G. G. Russell, R. L. Stanford, D. White, and Professor Sale.

Mr Justice WilliajiS expressed his. appreciation of the honortc that had been conferred on him through his election to the position of chancellor.

The VfcE-CHANCELLOu welcomed Professor Sale to the council, which would benefit by his ability and hia experience fu everything connected with university woiK. Professor Sale briefly acknowledged the compliment. , Mr White reported that the House Committee had conferred with the chairman and secretary of the Students' Association with regard to the proposition which had emanated from that body as to a ceremony of presenting diplomas. The representatives of the association stated that what was desired by them was that the chancellor or vice-chancellor should present diplomas to all those who had passed. The committee informed them that they Were asking the council to perform an official act which they had no power to do, either in the name of the Council or in tho name of the university. Eventually the chairman and secretary of the association requested time to further consider the matter. It was pointed out to them that arrangements might be made whereby the students could have the use of one of the lecture rooms wherein to hold their entertainments, and perhaps the council might see their way to meet the successful students in the library on a day to be arranged, and congratulate them on their having passed. A letter was received from Dr Findlay to the effect that owing to business engagements necessitating his shifting lo Wellington he had been compelled to resign the posiCion of lecturer on practical economy. He had arranged, subject to the consent of the council, with Mr W. D. Milne to continue the lectures.

Mr Stakford moved that the arrangement come to by Dr Findlay be carried out, on the understanding that the appointment was only a temporary appointment, to be terminated at the end of the session. The Chancellor expressed the opinion that Mr Milne was fully qualified to take the position, and the motion, being seconded, was carried. Mr John M'Lean (Redcastle) wrote that illness compelled him to resign his position on the council. — 'The resignation was accepted with regret. The secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps to enable the graduates to refill the position. Messrs C R. Richardson and R. J. Barrett furnished the council with a report from the Students' Association with regard to terms, and the matter was referred to a special committee. It was reported that the negotiations for the division of the Barewood runs were proceeding.
