ST. JOHN'S, WAIKOUAITI.
St. John's, Waikouaiti, has recently become possessed of a very handsome memorial window, the gift of Mrs Henry Orbell, of The Rivera, Waikouaiti, in memory of her late husband Mr Henry Orbell, who for many years took an active interest as lay reader, &c, ia the church's work in the district. The window has now been put in position in the east end, and produces a very pleasing effect within the building. It is undoubtedly a handsome one. The subject is "The Resurrection," delineated upon a back ground of Royal blue, light green, and neutral prune. The Saviour is seen Justin the act of ascending from the tomb, the calm light -of dignity, purity, love, and peace being ye -y cU arly shown in His face. Standing on His le lt ire tw ) angels— the one is supporting tha raited tombstone, the other is half kneeling with claspel Lauds in silent adoration. At Jesus' s feet the two Roman guards are seen rec'in'ig m a semi-recumbeDt posture, buried in dieamle b bI umber, their pxpressipn of total ucorjsciousuees of the wondeiful event being enacted so close to them is very characterise cally depicted ; the bright colouring in tb.3 guards' dresses, the angels' winge, and the dark blue sky above, give warmth and brightness to the scene. Under the window is written in old lettering the words: "I am the resurrection and the life," John xi, 25. The makers of the window are Belmont and Cox.
The Wairoa Guardian states that at the Nuhaka hot springs a patriarchal member of one of the tribes was enjoying his bath in real hog fashion, and, to improve the shining moment, prepared to have a pull at his pipe. No sooner had he struck a light, however, than the whole atmosphere in hia immediate vicinity became a sheet of flame, caused by the ignition of the sulphurous fumes arising from the spring. His chiefahip beat a hasty retreat, under the firm impression that the locality was the resort of taipo or some such Native abhorrence.
