KAITANGATA.

June 26.— The weather during the past fortnight has been anything but pleasant, and the majority of the streets are now coated with the customary number of inches of mud. The gale on Saturday night was very severe, some of the windows being blown in by the violence of the wind, while several trees were blown out by the roots, and other small items of damage done in the town« ship.

Amusements.— The lovers of amusements are being well catered for here at present, there being on an average about two concerts a week. The Masonic brethren's fortnightly concert— the items on the programme being entirely Scotch— was very well patronised, and each item was enthusiastically received. This week we aro to have a concert in aid of the school funds, for which a very good programme has been compiled, and on Saturday evening the Cadzow Concert Company give an entertainment. Surgical.— Ambulance classes have been opened by Drs Fitzgerald and Thomson, and lectures are delivered by those gentlemen to their respective classes in the Masonic Hall on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Dr Thomson has also opened special classes for ladies only, and has received very good support.

Salvation Army.— The Salvation Army has decided to open barracks here, and has for that purpose leased the Masonic Hall on all available nights. On Thursday night a large contingent of the army assembled to inaugurate the opening. Headed by Major Robinson, they attracted a large crowd at the street corners.

Ball.— Tho lords of creation are again busy arranging for their annual ball, and a well-attended meeting- was held in the Athenreum room last Tuesday evening, when it was decided that tho ball should take place on the 27th July, and preliminary arrangements have been placed in tho hands of a strong cornmittoe. Football.— The return match between the Kaitangata and Owaka Football Clubs was played on the Town Reserve here on Saturday afternoon, and, contrary to Madame Heller's prediction, resulted in a draw, neithor side scoring. The game throughout was very evenly contested, and the visitors strained every nerve to retrieve their past losses, but without avail. After the match the visitors were entertained at dinner in the Bridge Hotel, after which they started on the return journey home. A junior club has started here with a good membership.
