SHAG POINT.

June 25. — A social gathering of the employees of the Shag Point Coal Company was held in the Public Hall on Friday evening, 22nd, for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr Edward Clark, underground manager, who is severing his connection with the company for the purpose of taking up a more healthy occupation (gold mining). Mr Torrance presided, and in * few brief remarks introduced the guest of the evening. Mr Parnell delivered a felicitous speech, in which he dwelt on Mr Clark's long career in the district, extending over 22 years, and concluded by wishing him a long and prosperous future. He then made the presentation, which consisted of a splendidly illuminated address and a silvermounted walking stick. The recipient very feelingly responded, remarking that the address he bad received from those present would be handed down as an heirloom to hi 3 future offspring. The guest's health was then drunk with musical honours. During the evening dancing was indulged in, interspered with vocal items, recitations^ &c., the following ladies and gentlemen contributing to the company's enjoyment :— Miss Clark, Messrs H. Chester, Foster, Douglas, Brittain, A. Weston. and J. Koss. The singing of the last-named performer was a great treat, he being quite an acquisition to our local talent. Messrs Parnell, 11. Dunu, and F. Spears gave recitations, that of Mr Spears being very humorous. It was entitled "From the Controlling Influence of Drink," and was a take-off on the prohibitionist theory. A vote of thanks to the performers concluded a very pleasant evening's amusement, which was terminated by the company singing " Auld Lang Syne."
