THE COMMANDANT OF THE FORCES.

A copy of the " Broad Arrow and Army and Navy Military Gazette " of the 12th of May has just reached me, in which the following announcement appears : — " Major (with the rank of lieutenant-colonel in New Zealand) Francis John Fox retires from the service, receiving a gratuity." Silence has been well observed, but now that the fact of the colonel's retirement from the Imperial service has been published it is fair to speculate as to the reason, and, for my part, I shall not be surprised to learn that he elects to serve as a colonel-com-mandant under the Government of New Zealand, while the Premier will be pleased to tell the country that he is only too glad to retain the services of so distinguished & soldier as Colonel Fox as a colonial officer freed from the domination of the Horse Gaardß.
