ASIATICS AND FOREIGN LABOUR.
The Government Immigration Bill, to be introduced by the Hon. Mr Reeves, will be a measure of the greatest interest to the Labour party. It is designed to prevent the further influx of Chinese, who will be required to pay double the present poll tax, and prevent such an invasion" of Indians and other Asiatics—' chiefly pedlars— as has fallen upon some of the provinces of Australasia. Power will also be given to make illegal any low-wage contracts for the employment of foreign labour. This provision is designed to avoid the experience of the United States, where the labour problem had been greatly accentuated by the importation of cheap foreign labourers in large numberß under contract.
