SATURDAY, JUNE 23. RECONSTRUCTION.
It is published that there is a whisper in the lobbies that in the event of a reconsbruction of the Government either Mr Guinness (Chairman of Ccmmittees in the last Parliament) or Dr Fitchett (of Dunedin) will be sent to the Upper House with a portfolio. I have been aware of this impression in oertain directions for some d&ys past, but did not feel at liberty to print it. I may, however, now say that it is believed in influential and well-informed quarters that one of these gentlemen will be elevated to office with a seat in the Senate. If this be so the chaDge that it will involve is sufficiently obvious to make explanations unnecessary. Colour is given to the likelihood of Mr Guinness as the coming man from the alleged fact that the Premier vainly tried to induce Major Steward to retire from the contest for the Speakership and accept the Chairmanship. If Mr Guinness is moved up Mr Joyce will hope to find himself in the chair, but even in such event he is by no means a certainty for that office.
