WEST TAIERI AND MAUNGATUA PLOUGHING MATCH.

The annual ploughing competitions of the WestTaieri and Maungatua Ploughing Society were held on Friday afternoon in one of Mr W« Patrick's fields, Balmoral farm, Outram. There was a fair attendance of the public. There were 21 teams on the ground, and the com* petitors were well representative of the Taieri district. The ground was not in the best of condition, it being just a trifle too free ; but some excellent work was done by some of the teams. In the double-furrow event Messrs Gordonj Brown, M'Donald, aod Grant were expected to show some good work, and the four mentioned kept well together. The quality of their work was such as to lead to the expectat on that one of them would furnish tho winner, and as a consequence the spectators devoted most of their attention to the quartet. In Class E Messrs Barron and M'Hardy (2) did good work, and it was generally conceded that the quality of their work was superior to the others In Class A the work of Surfleet was greatly admired, and many of those present expressed the opinion that the work done by this per* former was such as »o entitle him to recognition at the hands of the judges. In Class B those present appeared to think that the work of Morrison and Webster was 1 the best, and there appeared to be little left to choose between the competitors mentioned The judges were Messrs D Sutherland (Mosgiel), K. B. Ferguson (Waitati , and James Allison (Milton), and their decision^ gave every satisfaction, the awarding of champion lot to Mr G. Gordon meeting with general approval. The committee woi'ked bard to ensure a sufr> cessful gathering, and to their efforts much of the success of the match w»s due The secretary (Mr J. Miller) was as usual courteous and - obliging, and under ; his superintendency things worked very smoothly. Results are appended :—: — Class A.— Swing ploughs; open to all-comers.
