SURVEYORS' INSTITUTE. Wellington, June 16
A deputation of surveyors waited upon Mr Seddon to ask the Government to introduce a bill this session incorporating the institute. They pointed out that there was no desire to form a close corporation excluding aDy surveyor at present holding a license, and that the legislation wanted was chiefly to put the profession on a proper basis and protect the public. The conference recently held in Melbourne drafted a bill to ba introduced by all the colonies, creating boards of examiners, and it was contended that it would be a loss to New Zealand if she held aloof from Australia on the matter.
The Premier plainly told the deputation that he was averse to the creation of any close corporation which would confer a monopoly upon members. He agreed that the present system of examination was defective, but thought it could be remedied perhaps without special legislation.
The deputation said there was no desire to exclude anyone who could pess th prescribed examination.
The Premier assured the deputation that the matter would be considered in Cabinet.
